“Kitchen design is a natural fit for someone as detail-oriented as Debbie Larsen of PB Kitchen Design in Geneva, Illinois.  Debbie is vigilant in her effort to get kitchen design right for each of her clients, and while she acknowledges that PB Kitchen’s projects are complex, she sees more and more homeowners making a concerted effort to research and be more purposeful in their planning to create simple, timeless spaces. Debbie is a multiple award winning designer and was recently featured in Kitchen & Bath Business magazine for her collaboration in a Sugar Grove, Illinois project with her colleague, Dave McFadden.”

“When Debbie first entered the old kitchen of this Chicagoland home, she saw the opportunity to open up the kitchen to a lake view. “They wanted an organic feel, to bring the outdoors in,” explains Debbie. “The client has a large family that often had extended family and friends over, so they wanted an inviting space where everyone could gather and be a part of the food prep process. We took down the dining room wall so that space now reveals views of the lake through the kitchen as well.”

to-do-listCheck out some helpful ‘Pro’ suggestions from Debbie!

#1 – Do your homework before your initial sit down meeting with a designer. Look at photos of kitchens online and make an idea book of what you like, but also, what you don’t want in your new kitchen. Houzz and Pinterest are fantastic resources for variety and inspiration.

#2 – Make sure you and the designer have good chemistry at that first meeting. For the most part, the cost of quality customcabinetry is not going to vary too much from showroom to showroom. Look for a design team that asks you questions and listens to your likes and dislikes rather than one that acts as though they have all the answers before they get to know you. When there’s good communication you increase the chances the designer can pull valuable content from your conversation and create a space that defines your unique personality. It’s all about connection

#3 – Get inspired. I went to school for interior design, but I get my inspiration from my clients, previous projects, other designers in the industry, architects, and furniture design. Again, online kitchen portfolios and sites like Houzz make for a great starting point in deciding what kind of kitchen you want to create.

#4 – Let your designer conquer the beast! A good designer is a fantastic listener. I love the depth of finding out about my how my clients use their kitchens in their daily lives and what defines them as a working family. It’s my job to draw those practical needs out of them, be precise in solving their spatial concerns, and ultimately creating a beautiful space they never want to leave.

#5 – If being innovative and unconventional excites you, tell your designer. I do enjoy a client who will break out of the proverbial kitchen design box. Currently, we are working on an “Organic Industrial” type of kitchen remodel which combines distressed finishes and clean lines. Woven into this design is a contemporary vibe with a sprinkling of natural stone, iron and steel elements. Don’t be afraid to be yourself and let your designer “see” your personality and quirks – the outcome can be marvelously you!

Are classic tile designs a trend that’s being phased out? – LaGrange, Hinsdale, Western Springs, Lisle, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, Lombard and MORE!

Lately, a lot of customers have expressed interest in wanting to redo their bathrooms or kitchens as their next interior design project for their homes. This got us thinking…what are the new trends for tile design? Are they still the same trends that have been popular for the last few years? Since there really is no straight forward way to find the answers to our questions, we started doing some research and came across a few articles about tile trends. One, in particular, caught our eye.

According to an article from Daltile, the classic look of tiles are slowing phasing out and individuals are developing new trends.

The article (Daltile – 5 Trends on their way out) states the following:

  • Square tiles are becoming less popular and homeowners are now gaining interest in other shapes, such as diamonds, lanterns, teardrops, octagons, hexagons, etc.
  • The usual standard 12×12 size tile is also changing. People are starting to select sizes such as 12×24 or larger.
  • Plastic is pretty much completely out. Natural seems to be the way to go, whether that be with stone or wood.
  • LVT is also becoming more popular because of technology continually getting better and making the products seem much more realistic and great on the eyes.
  • Less is more. Simple designs are the way to go instead of overdesigning a space.

Just because a trend is starting to be phased out or rarely seen, doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s a bad design choice. It just means that the popular vote now belongs to something else. We still stand behind our mindset that if you like something, stick with it! Your home is your personal space and should be a reflection of yourself. Even if all of your favorite design ideas are on the “not trending” list, we still say go for it! Choose what you love because at the end of the day, it’s still a space that you have to live in, not anyone else. As long as it makes you happy, oh well!

These designers have shown amazing talent in their work and have the ability to work very well with customers to help them choose the best interior design for their homes. Most of our designers do not only focus on flooring but a variety of different aspects of one’s home decor.

Kitchen Styles/Designs – LaGrange, Hinsdale, Western Springs, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Wheaton & MORE

We all have kitchens…but, we don’t all have the same tastes. This is why homes have such different kitchen styles and designs. Your kitchen is an essential part of your home, if not the most important room of the house, actually. You cook and bake great meals and yummy treats for your family in the kitchen. You probably host little get togethers in there as well and I’m sure you have enjoyed a cup of tea, coffee or hot cocoa while conversing with a loved one. Regardless of what you do in your kitchen, it’s important that it’s not only useful but that you enjoy being in the room and with the design of it.

Traditional vs. Modern – typically the main difference in kitchens today. What is your choice?

Traditional kitchens usually have a lot of wood finishes, lots of classic patterns, pale/muted colors, floral (most of the time), and always has a “homey” feeling to it. Traditional kitchens are often referred to as “cute” in design and comfortable, of course!

Modern kitchens are a bit different. They have smart appliances, are usually very geometric in design, lack so many wood finishes, a lot of cabinet space to hide appliances, utensils, glasses, etc., and has a very tidy and sleek look to it. Modern kitchens are often referred to as “stylish” and “sophisticated.”

Now, just because you like one style more than the other does not necessarily mean that you have to only have aspects from one. It’s YOUR kitchen, do what you want with it! The important thing to always remember is regardless of what your tastes are compared to what is “popular” or “trendy,” it’s your kitchen and should be a reflection of what your personality is!

Spring is around the corner, which means it’s the perfect time to start planning your remodel/redesign projects! Let DeSitter help you! Call or Visit one of our showrooms today to start making your dream room a reality!

Tile & Natural Stone – Finishes/Types – LaGrange, Hinsdale, Western Springs, Lisle & MORE

During our New Year Sale & Inventory Clearance Event, we have a ton of tile we are offering at amazing deals, so we thought we would take the time to explain what types of tile finishes there are.

The most common types of finishes for tile and stone are:
• Acid-washed – shiny with small etched marks. marble and limestone are common acid-washed products
• Flamed – rough, unrefined texture. granite is a common type
• Honed – also called flat, matte or satin finished. very soft look
• Polished – has a glossy shine finish

• Saw-cut refined – similar to matte but not completely honed
• Split-face – rough texture but not as rough as flamed. Slate is commonly done this way
• Tumbled – smooth surface with broken or rounded edges
• Brushed – by brushing the tile, you develop a worn-down look to it

Most common types of tile and natural stone are:
• Granite – igneous stone, very hard and dense, scratch resistant, hundreds of varieties
• Limestone – sedimentary stone, formed by calcite and sediment
• Marble – a type of limestone, metamorphic stone that is usually polished, very easily scratched
• Sandstone – sedimentary stone, rough in texture because of the loose grains of sand
• Slate – metamorphic stone that comes in sheets, composed of quartz and clay
• Manufactured Stone – synthetic stone made from natural stone, very strong, not likely to crack or chip
• Travertine – partially metamorphosed and crystallized limestone that can be honed and filled, similar to marble

• Ceramic Tile – made from clay and has been hardened by heating it, often shiny
• Porcelain Tile – type of ceramic tile that has had more heat applied to it making it more dense with less water absorption

**In case you don’t remember, igneous means it has been formed by the cooling and hardening of molten rock. Sedimentary means it’s been formed by the deposition of material over time. Metamorphic means it’s been formed when other rocks break down from heat and pressure.
